hazing (n.) : subjection to harassment or ridicule.
haze
(v.) 1.To persecute or harass with meaningless, difficult, or humiliating
tasks.
2.To initiate, as into a college fraternity, by exacting humiliating
performances from or playing rough practical jokes upon.
Alpha Phi Omega supports an anti-hazing policy. The Policy
reads:
No fraternity member shall take park in hazing activities. Hazing
activities are defined as (but not limited to):
Any action taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off fraternity premises or during fraternity functions, to product mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. Such activities may include but are not limited to the following: use of alcoholic beverages; paddling in any form; branding; creation of excessive fatigue, physical or psychological shocks; quests; treasure hunts; scavenger hunts, road trips; or any other such activities carried on in the name of the fraternity; wear of public apparel which is conspicuous and not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and buffoonery; morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; and any other activities which are not consistent with fraternal law, ritual or policy or the regulations and policies of the educational institution and local, state and federal laws.
Pledging is the time period, generally six weeks, in which you
are introduced to the fraternity and the brotherhood. During this time, you will
learn about the fraternity's history, symbols, and other traditions from the
Pledge Educator. The Pledge Educator serves as the liaison between the Brothers
and the Pledges, and you should feel comfortable communicating with the Pledge
Educator.
There are certain criteria to be met before becoming initiated as a Brother. These include, but are not limited to:
- Completing a set amount of service hours
- Attending all fraternity and pledge meetings, unless notice given to Pledge Educator
- Having dues paid, or payment plan worked out with Treasurer
- and other criteria set forth by the fraternity and Pledge Educator
